Ice Cream Bomb

Hostess is back!

I know this isn’t news, as the yummy snack has been in stores for a few weeks now. But I had to wait.  See, while everyone was jumping for joy over Twinkies being back, I couldn’t be happy until Ho Ho’s had returned. I just didn’t care about the Twinkies because I never liked them.  I’m not a yellow cake fan and Twinkies were always too sweet for me. I preferred Hostess’ chocolate goodies, like their cupcakes, Ding Dongs and Ho Ho’s.

I don’t know what it was about the tasty treat, but every once in a while I just had to have a Ho Ho. I’m not sure if it was the chocolate cake or the cream filling, there was just something about them that made me happy. Even as an adult, every so often I’d snag a bag while shopping. So you can understand why I was so upset when Hostess went bankrupt and stopped making these scrumptious treats. Sure there are other brands out there that make something similar; but let’s be honest, nothing compares to the original. And now that they’ve returned I can indulge once again either by nibbling on them right out of the wrapper or better yet, using them to make my grandmother’s ice cream bomb.

What’s an ice cream bomb? Only the easiest, most amazing looking ice cream dessert ever. Okay, easy may be a bit of an overstatement, but amazing looking, no question. And the perfect treat for a kid’s birthday party or ice cream social. My mother made it for one of my birthday parties once and I’ve been making this dessert ever since, especially when the weather turns warm. While you can make the ice cream from scratch, buying three of your favorite flavors is an easy way to make this dessert around lunch so it’ll be ready to enjoy by dinner time.  And trust me, family and friends alike will love this tasty treat and be overly impressed when they hear you made it yourself.

Ice Cream Bomb

Ingredients:

  • 15 Ho Ho’s
  • 3 quarts your favorite ice cream

Directions:

  1. Line a 10-inch mixing bowl with tin foil and set aside.
  2. Peel all the chocolate off the outside of Ho Ho’s. Then slice each Ho Ho into 1/4-inch slices. Line the whole bowl with the Ho Ho slices.
  3. Let the three ice cream flavors soften a bit so you can smooth the ice cream into layers. (It shouldn’t be totally melted, just malleable enough to form to the bowl and smoothed into a level surface for layering the next two flavors.) Scoop the ice cream into the bowl, one flavor at a time, so you have three distinct layers.
  4. Place the bomb in the freezer and let harden for at least four hours and up to over night.
  5. When ready to serve, invert the bowl onto a serving dish. Remove the bowl and the tin foil. Slice the bomb and serve with whipped cream or hot fudge… or both.
