Satan’s Whiskers (Straight)

Just like last week, this week’s cocktail has a Halloween theme. It’s even orange. Today I’m making a drink for all those people who are planning to or have ever dressed up like the King (or Queen) of Hell. Today’s cocktail is the Satan’s Whiskers… the straight version. No, I’m not referring to Satan’s sexual orientation, but rather his mustache. Depending on Satan’s mood, he’d either have it straight or curled. So, since Satan liked to change up his appearance, Harry Craddock, the cocktail’s creator, thought he’d do the same.

Although Craddock decided to change the drink to reflect Satan’s mood, Craddock only tweaked it slightly. After all, no matter what disguise Satan’s wearing you can still catch a glimpse of him peeking out from underneath, right? So, why not make a cocktail that does the same?

It’s amazing how much the flavor of a cocktail can change just by switching up one ingredient. Even changing out one orange liqueur for another can totally change its stature. I think that’s why Craddock chose to make the two. See, if you use Grand Marnier you get a Satan who’s chosen to keep his whiskers straight. But if you use Orange Curaco, you get a Satan who’s dressing up for the evening, complete with mustache wax for curling those evil whiskers of his.

It’s funny that Grand Marnier is considered the less dressy version of the drink because I find Grand Marnier to be the more luxurious orange liqueur which means it would give the whole cocktail a more regal air. But whichever version you prefer to make this Hallow’s Eve, (or whichever liquor you have available) make sure you have only one. More than that and you might just find yourself making an unwanted visit to hell.
