Grasshopper Cocktail

As I’m sure most of you know, tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day, the one day of the year most people look forward to as a reason to hit an Irish pub, have corned beef and cabbage for dinner and get rip roaring drunk. But instead of drinking a horrible glass of green beer, the same old pint of Guinness or a Black and Tan, why not go the classic route and have a Grasshopper? It’s still green and tastes much better than that pint. And since it’s so sweet, it makes the perfect after dinner treat.

The Grasshopper dates all the way back to the late 20’s when Philbert Guichet of Tujaque’s in New Orleans created the drink for a contest in New York City. Walter Winchell was the judge and he awarded the Grasshopper 2nd place. Although no one remembers which cocktail won the contest, the Grasshopper returned to its home in New Orleans and became one more drink automatically associated with the Big Easy.  The fact that it’s a pretty green color, makes it the perfect choice for tomorrow’s green themed holiday.
