Gin and Sin

Since the beaches reopened, my family and I have spent a lot of time there. It’s so nice to be outside and play in the cool water. We’ve built sand castles, swam, body surfed and boogie boarded.  It’s been wonderful! It almost feels like a normal summer. All this beach time makes me think of lovely summer cocktails. Cocktails that are light, full of bubbles and lots of ice. Cocktails that consist of either rum or gin. I know those two don’t usually go together, but those are the kinds of cocktails I like to sip when it’s hot and I’m lounging on the beach (or maybe, eventually by a pool). So, starting today through Labor Day, I’ll be making cocktails that are either tiki or gin or both. Yup, believe it or not there are a few tiki cocktails out there whose primary liquor is gin.

While today’s cocktail isn’t a tiki cocktail, it is a gin drink. It’s called the Gin and Sin and it dates back to the Prohibition. Made up of only four ingredients, it’s super easy to make and a drink that’s well worth a sip. While you probably don’t want to be sipping it on a sandy beach since it’s served up in a coup, you could easily enjoy this on a warm night with a lovely (grilled) dinner outside. It’s a classy cocktail that’s definitely worth another look.

Consisting of a handful of ingredients you probably already have in your pantry, this Prohibition cocktail is easy to whip up on a moment’s notice. Although it comes from at least the 20’s, no one seems to know when exactly it was created or how it got its name. It could be that it was sinful to drink during “the noble experiment”. Or maybe it’s because it combines the sweet grenadine and orange juice with the tart lemon juice. However the drink got its name, if you’re a gin fan, you should definitely shake this cocktail up this summer.
